Standing
at the head of the Vale of the River
Brit , and a few miles north of Bridport
, Beaminster and the surrounding
countryside provide good costal and
inland walking , or the opportunity of
enjoying the many local villages , and
nearby ancient towns such as Axminster
, Dorchester
, Sherborne , and Bridport , or the
costal resorts of Lyme Regis and
Charmouth . This is ,
of course "Hardy Country" , so
why not visit the novelist's birthplace
at Higher Bockhampton , or his later
home at Max Gate . Other local places of
interest include Mapperton House formal
garden and manor house , Broardwindsor
craft and design center , Abbotsbury
with its world-famous swannery and

plenty of sporting pastimes to enjoy
